I've been looking through the minefield of bikes to buy since my test last month.

Nearly bought a faired SV650 that was a pretty good bargain though it sold before I got to it.

Now I'm stuck. Do I stick with the idea of a SV650? Other options seem to be the Kawa ER-6f which the 2007 can be bought new now for

I wouldn't buy the ER-6. The SV is a good bike and there is nothing wrong with choosing the Honda either. My first bike after my DAS was a CBR600F Sport which I still have. Another option would be a Yamaha Thundercat.
With twins, you will have more engine braking so if you throttle off in a corner you may have some issues with the front end
Many people start on 400cc sports bikes, but they are very small (the bikes that is )

600f my 1st bike and very easy and easily quick enough to keep you interested for a long while. also very practical. i have a shopping trolly fitted (aka top box) to be back of mine for days when i take it to the airport or weekends at the folks.

sv650 is a good bike too but you may find you want more oooomph once you get used to it which you do quite quickly.

i agree with pip - steer clear of the er-6. have heard good things about the thundercat or you could go with a 600cc fazer or 600cc honda hornet which both have detuned versions of their respective sports bike brothers

I would suggest the Street Triple as mine is by a distance the best bike I've had or ridden, and certainly way better than the competition. But you're looking at delivery next summer if you order one now...

R6 is my first bike. Not had any probs with power being too much.
It's all in the wrist.

I park next to an orange ZX6R when I bring my bike into work.

It is a good looking bike
- In the flesh/metal it looks fabulous. I have the hassle of selling mine first though

I suspect you may be biting off a tad more than your much loved Triumph can chew there

I guess a CBR 600f would be too much to consider as a starter bike though I've heard I would perhaps be less likely to lose it to someones garden compared with a twin should I use too much throttle at an inopportune moment.
It was (is) my starter bike It admittedly has taken a little time to get used to the different riding position but it is much more forgiving, stable and comfortable than I anticipated. My ex bought the SV650 and she was clearly torn between the two bikes, but ultimately she thought it would be too much as a first bike. TBH, once you've driven a few well known roads a few times to build your confidence, it isn't an issue at all

Oh, and the F is pretty gutless below 5K so don't worry about an uncontrollable surge of power - supposedly something to do with emissions testing which means at 4K there's a bit of a flat spot which you can fix with an aftermarket exhaust and/or power commander III. Not made the mods myself as yet - how restrained of me
