Glad you didn't suffer worse injuries, Euan. The new bike looks very nice

As a matter of interest, did you have the "side" lights on (what do you call them on a bike?) or a dipped beam? I'm not convinced that my "side" lights are that effective to be noticed by dippy drivers so I often stick dipped beam on, even in good conditions. Am I being paranoid?
In the 27 years I have been riding on the road ( ) I always ridden with a minimum of dipped beam irrespective of the conditions.

On my Ducati and Triumph you cannot even switch the lights off...

Doesn't your bike have the dipped beam come on automatically? I thought yours was new or nearly new . Regardless, I'd use dipped beam all the time.
My CBR is a 51 plate and I assumed for the first couple of bike rides that the lights came on automatically too

Dug the manual out. The button has three positions:

1. All lights off
2. Position light, tail light and meter lights on
3. head light plus 2.

I usually ride with position 3.

Found a replacement bike eventually, and signed up today

2006 VFR800 VTEC

1200 miles on the clock, and doesn't seem to suffer too badly from the VFR low speed/mid throttle surge

Not as nice as the K1200s I tried 2 weeks ago , but a lot cheaper

Maybe next year ..........
Very nice Euan and quite a nice colour

Is there a kick at the vtec crossover point because i've heard people have had issues with vtec kicking in whilst leant over in the wet say whilst accelerating through and out of a corner??

IIRC bikes sold in the EU since a certain date have to have had dipped beam coming on automatically - I guess that must have been after 2001 Craig.

I'm not a huge fan of the colour TBH, but the only other option on that bike is black and doom blue. Looks better in the flesh though.

I doubt I ever go around corners with enough throttle to be near VTEC.

The "kick" I have to say I didn't really notice compared to my non-VTEC VFR, although it was wet greasy today so I was pretty easy on the throttle anyway. I think they have softened and changed the VTEC transition point since 2002 when they first brought it out, and certainly on this bike and a 2005 model I rode a few weeks back it didn't seem to be anything to worry me.

The VTEC works differently on the bike (2 extra valves come into play) to the cars and outboard motors for some reason - packaging perhaps

I'm not sure what Honda was trying to achieve really with VTEC as no-one seems to sing it's praises, and it's not appeared on any other Honda bike. It doesn't seem to accelerate any better than my previous VFR, and I'm not aware of improved fule consumption when cruising. I imagine it probably won't feature on the VFR1000 when (if, more likely) that ever appears.

I think that the VTEC on the viffer is pretty much a gimmick really and just cashing in on the cache of the car VTEC system, i heard it doesn't really add anything positive to the riding experience so seems pointless really.

Anyway good on you for still being out and about on your bike now that it's starting to get a bit chilly, mines has been tucked away since september

2003 IIRC - Bit of a pain though I'd imagine as if you just want the ignition on you'd be killing the battery without the engine running.
