just had a notification of intended prosecution through for exactly this - 59 in a 50.

Letter issued to me as registered keeper asking if I knew who the driver was. I admitted I was the rider (had no one else I could ask to 'volunteer') and as I remembered seeing the van ahead of me on the verge and thought I had slowed sufficiently I wrote stating that I had checked my speed and in my opinion was within the speed limit and asked for a copy of the photographic proof they said they had.

I then got a conditional offer of fixed penalty form as well as a photo (front view) with speed indicated on bottom of screen together with copy of calibration certificate for the gun!

Now got the choice of paying fine and 3 points or taking 'option' of contesting allegation in court.
is a picture not needed of the rear of the bike? how else is the speed matched to the registration plate?

i'd look for advice on this and contest it if the latter is needed.

no hills around my place and a recipe for disaster trying to jump on it with so little experience of the bike

EDIT: Sorry Neil, you meant "jump" as oppoosed to "bump" start. Not got any leads.

ah, well bump start not a problem either - get a mate to push you, engage 2nd gear and away you go.. depending on how flat the battery is.

if the horn work, but it won't turn over you should be ok.

anyway, as above, get an optimate or equivalent or remove the alarm - they're worthless anyway. i've left bikes standing with no alarms and no optimate type products for over a year in garages before. Fired up first time.

That said, my current bike consumes batteries every 2 years - with an optimate attached.

They just take your number down when you pass, and apparently that's good enough from having previously taken a photograph(s) of you. Seems to be std procedure.

Whether you need 2 operators to observe I'm not sure (you need corroboration in Scotland, and effectively down south also I think) - if the key issue is identification in this case, it makes you wonder if one witness is enough.

Another Optimate vote here too - mine sits on it permanently in the garage as I don't get out on it every weekend, and it only takes 10 days to run flat.

One of the insurance companies (Bennetts I think) was giving the Oxford equivalent away free with new business recently (I got one, but it lives at my folks place now).

Is it worth contesting?

Do you want the hassle of going to court?

Did you do it?

Do you think you'll get away with it?

Can your licence take 3 points?

I would probably just take the points and fine, unless there is a real possibility that you can get off
No point contesting it - I tested the waters by enclosing the covering letter saying I thought I was in the limit but the returned photo and speed gun conformity certification mean that I've got no where to go - I'll just accept the 3 points and fine as a lesson learnt - I genuinely thought I was within legal limit - but had that nagging doubt (as always) that its so easy to exceed the limit on a bike as they are generally so responsive. Managed to keep my license clean for nearly 3 years this time.

Never mind

PS - just sold the bike yesterday - not because of the ticket but short term finances required it. Only managed 350miles in 10 months but actually made
