I suspect that if you tow with a 3 series you will have some very " exciting moments "
Whilst it may have the tug , the handling will be less than perfect imho.
I tow with a T5 , my daughters S60 d5 does an equally good job but with much better fuel consumption

. Easier to drive than the S2000, good torque, nice V6, Japanese, so the build qualitiy will be good and it's not a BMW.

I think I'd take a 3 series over a T5 if it was down to handling. If you're worried about losing it due to the RWD, although bimmers are a bit sparse on the gizmo front, they do come with DSC. I would also have thought (assuming you're not getting a 4WD Volvo) that traction whilst towing would be better with RWD with the added weight over the rear axle....
ge2, if the Subaru interior doesn't put you off, then it might not be that daft a proposition. You'll get more car for your money that a 3 series - money that would offset the poor economy. I'd do my sums though...

If you wish to tow anything of substance with a 3 series it will handle like a pig in any testing conditions , regardless of its ability to tug the load .
Next to a proper 4x4 i dont think the T5 will be beaten, I have towed lots of trailers , caravans and horse trailers .
Its a totally different ball game with a load behind you .
There are so many guys here who will one day fall in shock when a T5 lashes them . Dont underestimate them folks or you are queuing up for a lashing

I'm not gonna claim to be a towing expert, but I'm intrigued to know how a FWD car makes a better towing car than a RWD one. I just would have thought that with more weight over the rear, that would be a better place to put the power down. The number of times I've seen poorly loaded caravans attached to the back of cooking V70s and the like with their nose in the air going nowhere spinning their front wheels in the gravel in the campsite near our house. I know that's simple operator failure but I guess it's just clouded my judgement.
