The Woman - more than I can currently afford! I could afford the day out, but running our own rally car costs an absolute bomb. I know some people who do it. One who I chat to now and then (name drop!) is Marcus Dodd. Top bloke. He explained the scale of costs to me once - hence its in the lottery category for me now

You can rally for a LOT less than that. We frequently see all sorts of things flying around the club circuits; so far in addition to the usual escorts and scoobs, we've seen Peugots and Skoda's (I don't mean rally cars, just your average road car with a cage etc.!!)

Rallying does not have to cost the earth, yes you can go & spend 90K on a BDA engined MKII (or buy one second hand for half that)... but you can also get them in lesser spec a LOT cheaper than that.... I have a Rally prepared MKII sat in my garage - in this case Tarmac spec but its only a spring & damper change to put the forest stuff back on.
You dont need a full on GP4 spec car to start, in fact thats the last thing you need. Far better to start with something simpler, cheaper and fun. E
If you want to do anything like this, join your local motor club - there are LOADS of them, and lots of events going on every weekend. If anyone wants any more info then PM me.

I asked the guys about costs.
They do the couse full time, with up to 3 days driving and the rest of the week on maintaining the cars.
They have also converted the cars to LPG as then last longer between re-builds.
If you think it is cheap, think again!

Was that as a result of my recommendations at the SW thrash? Good on you! I guess you didn't win the day, or you would have said!
Here's me and my son on the Welsh Endurance rally last weekend - going quite well (12th out of circa 45) after the first set of stages...and then the LH driveshaft failed on the night road rally and we had to retire. That's motorsport

Not cheap, no, just doesn't have to be as expensive as 90k Still more than I can afford, just not THAT expensive
The car's we've seen going round, we've even joked we could take the Mondeo round with a little modification, and go faster than some of them - I think it's one of those sports where can spend as little or as muchas you want - it's still fun but the more you spend, the better the car; last rally we were at (Fat Albert) we had about 4-5 mechanical failures on our junction. Everything from fuel pump to drive shaft popping out. Even had a gear linkage fall off, car managed to finish in one gear, and we actually found the part and all the washers during the next break - managed to get all the bits back to him in service an dhe completed the rally (another 4 stages)!
