I dont really see a problem with them AJ, to be honest most cars fitted with HID lights are much brighter than front fogs anyway If I do make it up at the weekend, I will be sure to put them on for you for a comparison LOL

But when are fog lights day-time running lights...

As of 2011/2012 DTRLs are to be mandatory EU-wide IIRC, so it might just be some forward-looking types getting used to switching them on now.

A few cars I've owned had the light switch set so that dipped lights were required before fogs would come on, many folk put them on in heavy rain and forget to switch them off again.
Twat last night stopped at lights and got out to ask why I had full beam on behind him, he didn't know he had rear fogs on despite a HUGE amber light on in the dash, I suggested he go home to RTFM, which I had to explain of course.
He drove off with them still on.

There's clearly some psychological reason for the use of fog-lights - rather than just the prevailing weather conditions.

Accordingly, I decided to study the usage of fog-lights scientifically with me as a subject, employing an appropriate methodology. Last week I drove everywhere with the fog lights switched off and I took the Szondi test on Friday evening. According to the results, I'm in the Epileptic/Hysterical category.

All this week I plan to drive everywhere with the front fog lights switched on. I will take the Szondi test this coming Friday evening and report the findings.

Should the results of the test place me in an 'improved' category, I shall of course continue to drive everywhere with my fog-lights on.

My wife goes out in the unmarked police cars quiet a bit, and when she does, she get them to pull anyone over who she see's with fog lights on when not needed.

Dont know why it annoys people so much, it annoys me too, but to be honest, if they are standard fogs, they do not blind, if anything they make the car stand out a little more.... just because its illegal and because of that, I dont do it, even if I want to.

I used my rear fog today as the rain had reduced visibility. Seems pretty sensible to me.
So at night you would have this on for the same reason?

There's nothing worse than driving in rain following extra bright red lights - hugely distracting for the car(s) behind IMO.

Highway code says:

226
You MUST use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced, generally when you cannot see for more than 100 metres (328 feet). You may also use front or rear fog lights but you MUST switch them off when visibility improves (see Rule 236).

and

236
You MUST NOT use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced (see Rule 226) as they dazzle other road users and can obscure your brake lights. You MUST switch them off when visibility improves.

That's the point.

I don't mind people having their fog lights on if they think that the visibility is reduced to 100m or less.

The issue I have is with the morons who put their fog lights on because of this reduced visibility and then drive at speeds inappropriate to the conditions. You see them all the time on motorways, front and rear fogs, pouring rain... 90+ mph...

I agree though that once the car behind has obviously seen you, by dint of not driving into the back of you then you should turn your fogs off just like you dip your headlights for oncoming traffic at night...

Oh and then there are the ones who put them on once in January and have forgotten where the switch is come the following September...

I find them very useful as an early warning device when it's not foggy.
