I wouldn't even hesitate in getting one of these:

Miles are a bit high but a remap and exhaust will get you 300 bhp.

LOT of car for the money.

They do but I believe they need a lot of modding to get decent handling & power out of them. Unless you look at the older JDM STi wagons.
They also say what they are & do and are well known.

The forester is basically the same chassis, engines and mechanics just different body. Hence why you they didn't do STi wagon once they did the Forester STi. Bit more practical as well.

Mods wise,

I looked at the Forester when I was getting rid of the Impreza wagon - there wasn't much more room or practicality over the Impreza to warrant the change to be honest, which is why we ended up with the Legacy.

As for the Impreza wagon, they have a crossmember between the rear wheels that the saloon doesn't have, which stiffens up the rear end and gives them better handling - there is understeer if you boot it in the middle of a corner with the front wheels turned, but a little lift off before you floor it and they come round pretty well (ie. you have to be a ham fisted arse to get terminal understeer). The handling is pretty good as standard - certainly better than the (ham fisted arse's) online reports suggested it would be.
