Were they of er um Eastern European looks or Pikey-like Red-Necks?

You did the right thing in NOT reacting.
If you think that phoning the Police makes it better, then do so, however they won't do anything about it because your statement isn't enough weight to get a conviction.
Unfortunately the best thing you can do, if you aren't recording it, is to simply carry on driving normally.

I hate drivers like this ...
You did the right thing calling the police and the call handler was wrong to pass the comment they did.
Telling you to report it to your local station is correct - them telling you to go back to the area it happened is totally wrong. You need to fill in a form and then the police will write to the owner of the car. You can get the form at any police station - it is not a case of making a statement, more a formal complaint against the other persons manner of driving.
The index would - I hope - have been circulated over the main working radio channel for the area involved ..... and the fact you called the police and what you said is recorded on a computer message for the force covering the county where you were - so if it is stopped in that force area the officers would be made aware it was concerned in this ....

Thanks for your reply. Notts police insisted they didn't use any forms, however Lincs police clearly explained that they use them. I'm waiting to hear from Lincs, who will either visit me or send me the forms, I believe.
Are you saying the incident will only be known to that particular area? If so, that really won't help anyone as this was on the A1, he could live anywhere and continue doing this or worse.
Does the letter just state the allegation and a warning?
I'm glad you said ringing the police was the right thing to do, I feel a bit better about it now!
Thanks,
