privatised roads wont work in the uk.we are too small.all that can be done is improve what we have and make public transport a choice we want to use.

But there isn't a need for road tax any more.
As has been said, stick the price on fuel and reap the rewards of less admin and taxation of foreign drivers.
The thing is, the Government will have done their sums and it'll show that this will net them less money.
Eventually, as people switch to the zero road tax vehicles, they will do that.

as someone who comes from the countryside (now a city slicker mind) a pay per use scheme disproportionately affects people in the countryside. So unless it's very complex and takes into account needs users, it's going to be an awful thing.
It'll also put paid to trips like today where I drove from Leeds to the highlands, just because. It'll drive people abroad for holidays, just as people are starting to holiday in the UK a bit more.
