The way I read this was that they will be introducing a 'Showroom Tax' by increasing the VED for the first year only.
No figures mentioned though except for cars below 130gKm not having to pay anything.

I doubt anyone will notice most cars like that are bought on Personal Contract Hire 
Although they don't take into account all those Citroen Saxos with decat pipes
Anyways it's hardly a massive change relative to the cost of motoring and it makes sense to have a disincentive to the most polluting cars. Although if I'm being honest I don't think this is enough and as such is really an exercise in generating more income for the already very rich carbon trust.

OK so I might be buying a land cruiser this weekend. The increase on tax on cars registered as far back as a 51 pate will hit me next year. Its main purpose is off-roading at rallies, towing the caterham (therefore getting 2 cars moved for one cars CO2 production) and taking me to the station. The elsie does the fun stuff.
Sounds fair to me - pay more for something that will be used in a suitable manner. Trust me this wil be no chelsea tractor. Maybe I should attach 2 duracell aa batteries and a motor from a radio controlled car, call it a hybrid and just leave it running to kill the world.

I did see an LPG conversion LC..... 
The showroom tax thing bothers me a lot less than the road tax increases - at least when you buy a new car you know what you'll be shelling out for and you have a choice. Bob Gerard et al starts to look a lot more attractive again!
WIth the road tax stuff it was introduced AFTER you'd bought the damn car so you are trapped in the situation. And now retrospectively taking it back to 01 takes the p*ss.
Its such rubbish - surely its more environmentally friendly to carry on driving your old car than it is to dispose of it, build a new one, and run that!
