Default BMW paint

I've got a small problem with the paint on my 1 series-just wondering whether anyone here had seen anything similar.

I've got an area of my rear bumper that doesn't look quite right. When you run your fingers over it the paint feels bumpy and bobbly. I've uploaded an image to this post to try and illustrate!

If anyone's got any idea what's going on please let me know!

got any close-ups? hard to see what those bumps are. is it foreign or the paint itself? if foreign, have you tried claying yet?

I've tried a clay bar. it doesn't do anything to the bobbles. I've uploaded a close up, below. Its as much of a macro as an iPhone will allow!

You can only really notice it when you're up close, but its annoying nevertheless!

I think the clearcoat's reacted. Was it out of an aresole can or by a 'magic repairer', do you know?

I don't know. I've had the car since September last year. It was a lease hire company car before I had it. I don't have much in the way of detailed documentation.

Will this get worse?

It will get worse.

It's either inclusion under the basecoat - dust I expect, or silicone/oil reacting with the respray.
Often you can see that near boots and door shuts, as there can be a lot of interior furniture polish sprayed about.
No doubt got a blow over in the street before it came off-hire so they didn't get stung for a repair.

It will have to come back to the basecoat and be done properly.

nightmare! It wasn't there when I bought the car. I'll have to hunt through paper work and phone the lease hire company to see if they've still got the records of any bodywork. Its only four years old so the repair warranty should still be in effect.

Unlikely to be under warranty if it was a back street job

I can't be sure from the photo, but it looks like solvent pop.

Solvent pop happens when the surface of the paint skins over before the solvent trapped in the paint evaporates out. It looks fine at initially, but then the trapped solvent blows little craters in the surface of the paint at a later date, often when the vehicle gets hot. It happens because the repairer has tried to dry the paint too fast or not allowed it to flash off properly between coats.

The only way to deal with it is to remove paint in the affected area and respray. It may get worse or it may stay as it is depending on whether there is still solvent trapped under the surface.
