don't buy a diesel
they are not that economical
the petrol engines are nicer - the bigger the better
even my car does 20mpg
why have a smelly hulk that does 25mpg?

San , new 530d BMW is a great looking car IMO. Plus you can get those engines chipped to nearly 300 bhp if you like. If I wanted an old mans car I would def get a 5 series

It was a manual and did 42mpg, verified by my sat nav/fuel, calculations.
Pretty rapid in the real world...not so good at 0-blah type figures tho.
A better car than the petrol 330 in the 4 door version IMO if you after a mile muncher.
If I have the misfortune to be doing > 30k miles again I would get another.
Once it is warm it even sounds good.
The 2.5 Omega diesel had the Beemer engine in it BTW...

You can thrash the nuts off mine and it will never go below 23 mpg. On motorways its 28mpg.
I was looking at the add for the alpina d3 and that looks really nice for 27k.

I don't think San is considering an X5, so that vehicle's consumption isn't relevant
as I said, you can have 400bhp and 20mpg all day long (and close to the budget)
or you could have say, 35mpg, no revs, half the performance and the great experience of diesel on your hands, feet and clothes
based on 12,000 miles a year, running the diesel would save you less than

Funny you should bring this up, Gad, I had a trawl through and found your experiences of the M5's consumption and you mentioned you get 20mpg. What's your mix of driving? Do you do more motorway miles? I'm still keen on the idea of the E39 and as I don't do mega-miles, I think it makes sense financially.
530d E39s should manage 30-35mpg, because the earlier 3-litre diesels were obviously less powerful. The economy dipped to about 28-30 with the 204bhp 330d but as the engine advances in terms of power-to-economy, the more powerful 231bhp versions of it today can get nearer to 40mpg.
It's up to you San. I'd suggest an M5 for
