A mate of mine spent 35k on a new Z4 with the retractable tintop and after less than a month of ownership, she had it back to the dealer more than 4 times with roof related problems that they eventually couldnt fix and she got all her money back !

Ive been trying to persuade her to get an S ! we will see this weekend on a few test drives.

Had a 30 minute TD in an E89 35i this aft.

Grunt-tastic motor with minimal lag mated with superb auto box
Vastly improved genuinely 'premium' interior
Impressively smooth and ostensibly well-engineered roof

Wieldy

In the final analysis, IMHO this car is not really a replacement for the old Z4. Neither is it in any way comparable to an S. The new E89 is, in fact, a move upmarket into the realms of a GT with a good turn of speed - think of it as a Z5 (the Z2 will likely be the 'new' Z4 - hopefully there'll be one with a 2.0IL4 TT with 300hp and 1200kg and THAT - if done right - should be a fine sportscar). Whilst the car feels solidly planted and the ride is a reasonable compromise between comfortable and sporty, the car's 1.6 tonnes are always readily evident and, as such, there's no way this car can reasonably be described as tactile and chuckable. The engine and autobox are seemless and hugely efficient: there's even a decent soundtrack too.

All in all a fine car providing you're looking for an effortlessly rapid GT rather than a sportscar as such.

Good review.

See how much more mature and better-balanced v. Honky Tonk's Bimmers are than Mangle Wurzel's?

Yep. The S would ficking ANYALAYTE the Bimmer thru the twisties

I think I'll go and have a go in one of these ZZZZZZ4SDSdrive35iS3.0ILTTSSS1600kgLARD-drive-whatevermejigs this afternoon just to see for myself.
Who is ANYALAYTE?

The new Z4 was designed to be an SLK competitor and not set against the Boxster etc. When the model was designed women had major input in the key design features as the previous Z4 failed to be as successful with the female market.

It's a GT car, a baby SL... that was pretty obvious as soon as they opted for the folding metal roof.

I am split on the looks, great interior, but slightly awkward from some angles... bit like my car!

The new dual clutch gearbox is awesome though, and combined with the 35i engine would make a great laid back GT with effortless power.

^^ Shurely shome mishtake?

(I'm currently quite peturbed by how much I enjoyed the effortless grunt and style of the Z4SDSdrive35iManBag I tried the other day.....
I could almost be tempted to pick a secondhand one up during the depths of this coming winter - when Credit Crunch 2 '$2.4tn Arm & Alt-A' opens.....)

The style's a bit effortless, I agree.

I've always had a fondness for SLs (the W113 is almost exactly my age and the R129 was excellent) so I can understand the appeal.

Saw a white one yesterday, it looked like a boat.

The dark blue one I saw before looked OK though. If you like that sort of thing.

What 'that sort of thing' are you referring to? The Z4 isn't even trying to be a light tactile sports-car like the S. That it is something in many ways entirely different doesn't detract from its undoubted qualities and appeal.
Dunno, shiny new BMW sports car things?

It wasn't a criticism
