Never seen the point of them - they waste power and energy and aare usually used by people bragging about engine power - a total contradiction.
Surely redirecting that power is the best way?

They don't waste power, Kelk.
All turbo cars have a dump valve, it's just most of them recirculate back to the inlet. VTA types become a bit more essential at higher pressures, as Pip says. Venting it back to the intake doesn't give you any more power, because of the small volume and the fact that you aren't accelerating when it goes off, so it's not getting consumed.
I am not a fan of VTA type ones as they quite often screw the fuelling up on a car running an OEM ecu, as Nick says. I had an Impreza with one and it caused it to spit flames due to the overfuel!

For MQ's benefit sounded like a very angry cobra when the dump valve was under pressure (and I was in a car behind it)
Currently the intake on my car sounds like a chirruping bird or a trapped mouse (varies on speed) which is either nice or blinking irritating

All getting rather technical for me!
The husband is looking to have a BOV or something like that for his Evo, but as MB has said it is not as simple as it may be. He loves that chattering sound.
As for me, I took the airbox lid off for the summer yesterday. Shocked two teenage boys as I blatted it under a motorway bridge - I've missed that noise!

This is how my old 200SX used to sound (engine bay was much nicer on mine though ).. the recirc system had been removed, and at low boost the compressor surge would sound a little rattle snakey.. i bought the car like that and it was annoying at first, but i quite miss it!! (sounded better with more revs/boost than in the vid)
The 200SX boys refer to it as the "pidgeon mod"
