I guess if you have a caterham as a weekender. Then you can let a certain amount of common sense come into it when you a buying a daily driver.
FWIW I always preferred the stying of the Evo to the Impreza. But then I bought the S )

Jo, what are you after? A fast car? A car to replace the S as a dailer driver? A car you're going to feel safe in when you are driving it? Because you've got the Caterham coming, do you want to compromise your day to day ride so you enjoy the Caterham more?

Coincedently someone at work bought a WR1 a couple of weeks ago, and I've just been out in it for the first time.
#### me that thing is fast. Properly fast, not S2000 fast. We only went out for 10 minutes and I'm still shaking!!! I've never been in anything with such vicious acceleration. I would lose my license or kill myself within 3 months if it was mine!
Try one of those if you can Jo. Apparently low milers are around

WR1 is around the 4.2 too I think
I don't know enough about these cars to make an informed argument on price Mark, and I'm sure you're correct about the price difference. Do the JDMs still have problems with mapping to our fuel like in the MK1 days, or is that no longer an issue. And do the main dealers still have a ban on servicing JDM imports?
Anyway, that WR1 was bloody fast! God only knows what yours was like in the featherweight MK1 body!

Neil, the newer cars are a lot more robust / less sensitive to fuelling, but an Ecutek remap is still advised. And yep the dealers still wont play ball on warranties / servicing but there are plenty of good / cheaper specialists out there.
I do miss mine sometimes

Ok you're all talking subaru gobbledegook
The company criteria are (no its not a company car but they still put rules on the private car):
< 5 years old (so doesn't make sense to buy a 4 year old car I have to sell in 12 months)
ABS
Airbags for driver and passenger
< certain mileage (can't remember what)
My problem with the S?
Other cars freak me out after last year (as in, I'm fine on an empty road but add traffic and I stop smiling)
It's killing my back, also after last year
Scooby might tick some boxes, but it also needs to be comparable or better on fuel than the S: the company pays a measly 11.5p/mile (below 2.0L) or 13.5p (above 2L) and no I can't claim the rest from the IR due to our poxy co. car scheme, so even with the S I'm running at a personal loss permile.
The car has to make me grin - I couldn't hack driving an "ordinary" car or a beater on a daily basis. Mileage is probably 15k or so/annum, maybe more, maybe less.
