Your choice for affordable daily driver/track car?

I would say nothing really fits the bill. The closest cars would be Miata, S2000, Corvette or Cayman. However I'm not sure any are that great as track cars with out a few mods. The Miata is supposed to be too soft from the factory. The S and the Miata lack the sort of roll protection offered by the Vette and Cayman. The latter two do ride reasonably well and have more power than the S. They also cost more in tires and more if you wad them up. In this case I would really recomend a cheap Miata with bar and racing seat and a nice sports sedan as a daily driver.

Man, I must be doing it wrong, because if I get on it while making a U-turn the tires easily break traction and I get a lurid power-slide. Very fun.
Anyway, my personal opinion is that the S2000 is ideal for the combination of a) affordable, b) daily and c) track. The Miata is all three as well, but not quite enough "oomph" to get my blood going. The Cayman is excellent at b) and c) but doesn't quite qualify for a) unless you have a fairly higher level of wealth than what's needed for an S2000.

I would not purchase a car with the N54 in it at this point, especially for a track car. Although the motor is competent, it does not fit the reliable requirement people typically would need for daily driving.
