The next step. Lower the hiring requirement (education, working experiences) to reduce salary expenses and stay competitive with other companies.

Wow, you really take the phrase "out of context" to the next level.

What GM need is better products. Better products come from the trees or more educated and skillful workers?

The point is not giving free rides to the Union workers.

The point is what is good for GM in the long run.

I guess if GM's management has been making good decisions affecting its long term goals, we would not be having this discussion here.

BTW, GM has just decided to sell their holdings in Fuji Heavy Industry(parent company of Subaru). The sticking point is Fuji Heavy Industry is sticking to its gun to Subarus' horizontally opposed boxster engine (which is not conform with the GM global platform)......

It is like VW forcing Porche to make front engines to utilize its VW platforms to save some money. Go figure.

Buying losers(Saab...etc) and selling winner (Subaru's parent company). You have to give it to GM. They are genius!

The Feds let employers deduct ~$5K per employee on education. Few employers pay much past that anyway. Note that they're not cutting it out entirely (why do it when the government basically lets you do it for free?).

Yes, it's sad, but that's a definite fringe benefit that needs trimming.

I am failing to see what is sad about GM changing their reimbursement program so that it is at the same level as other car manufacturers and suppliers?

my employer gives out up to $25,000 a year for tuition at full reimbursement.

GM instead should lenthen the retention period for these people instead to get more ROI, not cut the benefit down.

VW couldnt force porsche to do anything. VW never owned any of Porsche. One of the few.. since, for example, fiat has owned much of ferrari for many years.
