I thought to myself.. he isn't even wearing a helmet.. but I guess if he crashed at some of those speeds a helmet likely wouldn't do much good anyway.

The difference in tires alone between then and now would make a huge impact. The rears were relatively narrow compared to what they are putting on 911s these days. Throw it and catch it may have been the fast way around. I've never driven a similar model 911 at anything above about 6/10s,so I have no idea what it would take to hustle that beast around a track.

Yellowbird was made to be fast in a straight line above all. Hence narrow body, relatively narrow tires, no downforce (modest whaletail instead of turbo whaletail or wing). That kinda power/weight without huge tires and without some downforce may not be as fast, but it is fun
