So you are telling us that you found someone willing to let you, a 17 year old kid with no motorcycle experience ride their R1.

Bullshit.
The owner of the bike is 19 and a good friend of mine.

First of all, while your friend is very nice to let you ride his R1 when you have no experience what so ever, it's also very dumb because it could've killed you.

Second of all, just because somebody stalls it 4 times when they first start out doesn't mean that they don't know how to ride. I'll take the embarrassment of stalling over falling on my ass through a turn any day.

Lastly, I think you should start out slow. Take the MSF class, and get a used bike as your first bike. Something less radical than the R6/CBR600rr...etc, maybe like a SV650s, Ninja 500...etc. It might not be nearly as fast as the R1, but you'll learn much faster and better on it. You'll want to feel comfortable and confident on your first bike, not intimidated by it. I gurantee if you get a bike like a R1 as your first bike, you'll never get anywhere close to it's true potentials. (Even the most experienced riders will have trouble pushing those bikes to the limit)

It's a common misconception that people have about driving on side streets, they are NOT safer then highways. Highways are far safer because generally speaking no one makes a left turn in front of you - the most common of all motorcycle accidents.

Ride whatever you want, just keep your head, and wear protective gear. There is no inherent difference between a 350 and a 600cc as far as accidents go. You can cruise around the neighborhood on a 350 at 60 per and get killed just as easy. get some training. Have fun.

Bad enough that the owner is 19. That means he's been driving for, what, 3 or 4 years total? That R1 makes 99.9% of anything with wheels on it feel slow. Yeah <sarcasm on>, good choice for a 1st ride. You've indeed got a good friend there. <sarcasm off>

If common sense doesn't steer you away from an R1, check out insurance rates on it for a teenager (of course, if the money is being handed to you by parents/relatives, it's prob. a moot point).

My point was that I didn't go into traffic, period. No cars around. This is a quiet residential neighbourhood. If there are vehicles moving, it's definitely going to be potentially dangerous no matter how slow they're moving.

I wear full gear when I ride. Helmet, gloves, boots, and jacket. I didn't wear full leathers because I didn't have them.

I was told the New 05 R1 has has an extremely long first gear. I talked to an owner and he said he can do 100 mph in 1st gear. That's insane. He said they did it so when downshifting into corners for more power you weren't going to hop the bike because an overrev.

BS, that 's what back-torque limiting "slipper-clutches" are for.
