not really bad. CAFE is an average. so provided car makers make lots of fuel efficient cars, they can still afford to make supercars. esp corvette sells in fairly low numbers, it doesn't really add as much as all the YUKONS and TAHOES and SUBURBAN do.
there is a lot of movement in the corvette engineering right now - they might actually move away from the current concept and get a real, mid engine supercar out of it, with areal hefty price tag though (+100K).

Imagine if manufacturers just stopped selling cars in California.

To have any real effect, the CAFE for trucks will have to be raised to match the CAFE for cars. Why should a 12 mpg Escalade get a break that at 12 mph Viper doesn't get? The auto makers are masters at taking advantage of the lower CAFE for trucks; for example, a Suburu Outback is a truck not a car so it falls under the lower CAFE.

Well the domestic manufacturers... the ones most effected by the law would post even higher record losses than they already are.

Nah, actually the import companies would take a bath if they stopped selling cars in California. Just living out here in LA, the domestic cars are scorned. A for example, 12% of BMW's worldwide sales (WORLDWIDE) is in LA alone !

Yep yep. Cafe standards are also based on volume sold, so 1000 corvettes at 15mpg with 20000 impalas (or whatever) at 30 mpg is not bad.
