Default WTF! Horrible noise!

Well my grandma is away on vacation so we went to start up her car after a week of sitting still. It's an Acura TL (last body style).

When you watch the video notice the RPM's fluctuating, I DID NOT TOUCH THE GAS WHAT-SO-EVER. I just started the car and it did this out of no where. Also, when I film the engine bay listen to all the horrible sounds going on in there. And one last thing, at the very end if you listen carfully when I put the camera REALLY close you can hear a clicking, it is in a pattern. It's like an engine having a bad dream!

The fluctuating idle happens alot to newer Hondas that have throttle by wire when there is vacuum leak somewhere. Atleast the ones I have seen.

Well it's not new, but should I check for a vaccum leak somewhere? Also, I couldn't tell you the last time she changed the oil so I'm going to do it for her tomorrow. Anything else?

the fluctuating idle is probablly cause by a bad idle air control sensor. Or something like that. It happend to a friends CL (same motor). if that is the only thing wrong then it shouldn't cost too much to fix. The part should cost under 150. Good Luck

Fluctuating idle=bad/stuck IAC valve. Almost guaranteed. Seen it on many Hondas, as well as the s2k.

We found out what was wrong... It's when you don't close the gas cap all the way. If it isn't done the full "3" clicks it will do that!!!! WTF? We told her about it and she said it's happened to her before

I hate to break it to you, but the fuel cap has NOTHING to do with idle fluctuation. It may have stopped fluctuating after you tightened the cap, but the 2 systems are completely seperate. It was a coincidence. I'd bet the fluctuation will return.

Not to mention the Pending P0505 DTC that is most likely stored, for a Faulty IAC.

I had the exact same thing happen to me this past winter. If you check out the Acura TL forums, they might tell you to clean out the air idle control valve using carb cleaner. Don't waste your time! It's an electronic piece and needs to be replaced. It is an easy fix. Remember to replace all the gaskets when you take off the throttle body. Good luck!
