Default WRX STI vs Lancer EVO VIII

Now that I see the STI is coming soon, does anyone have a decent comparision. I have not heard much about the STI.

Looks like the EVO VIII is about 3000lbs - 273 hp (not sure about 5 or 6 speeds).

Mitsu says it will be announcing all information on January 3rd, 2003 for the EVO.

What are the rumored stats on the STI?

I would assume if a WRX can rip off 14.1

The EVO and the STI should both be able to nail the 1/4 on the low 13's with an average driver. The AWD definitely helps too.....yes, I know they are NOT meant to be drag cars but can easily be treated as so

I am having a heck of a time debating on which one to get. When they are both available, I will have to drive both and see which one I like. My A4 is due for a new owner (123,000 miles) so these two are on my top list. I like the looks of the Subaru just a bit but the EVO is no ugly chicke either....

There aren't any comparo's yet for US spec models, or even specific details as to what the US spec models are going to be. There are rumors that either/or are going to be the same as Euro spec, but we won't know for sure until they announce and unveil them. I'm just hoping that the Evo VIII comes over with it's full assortment of differentials since, from what I hear, those really make the car what it is and not just a more powerful WRX (not that that's a bad thing...) And the STi will hopefully be the new body style, which, IMO looks a lot nicer than the current one.

Either way, I'll be happy to do a back to back comparison for anyone who's interested

If they're anything like the ones we have here in OZ then expect the EVO to be about lineball with the e46 M3 on the tracks as well as in the straighline. As far as the STi goes expect it to be about lineball with the S2000 in terms of both lap times and acceleration. Even though the STi has a slight ednge off the line, the S2000 is line-ball or even a tiny fraction quicker once moving.

I have driven the EVO and met (now 3) STIs on the track and we did do a few runs.

Also I have now both STi as well as the EVO taken on 3 different tracks by the same pro driver. The EVO is always good 2-3secs quicker per lap.

ps. The specs of the Oz STi are ~1450kg and 195kW. EVO weights ~1300kg and produces 206kW.

DavidM,

Curious about something. The term "lineball' is easy enough to understand in context, but I'm wondering about the origination. Can you enlighten me?

hehe Mike. I'm nut sure where the term 'lineball' comes from but I can tell you what it means. It means (as you have probably deduced) that the cars have roughly the same accelerartion.

How can there be a comparison when the two cars aren't even out yet?

Besides look at the two cars you are talking about...they are ugly as hell. I see Lancers on the road all the time and wonder to myself who designed that piece. The nose looks like complete crap and what it with the rear of the car?

There has been some info leaked out about both cars...... you won't have to wait until "they are out" to do a comparision.

The "Lancer EVO" is an entirely different car than the "Lancer" just in case you were not aware of that (which you apparently are not aware). DUH.
