Today's cars are much more aerodynamically clean than those of ten or twenty years ago. Also, some of today's high-end sports cars, such as the aforementioned Ferrari F430, sport functional diffusers, which didn't even exist on race cars until relatively recently. For those reasons, I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss aerodynamic improvements, or any other innovation, as irrelevant to the consumer space.
