Would you sell your S2000 for an older exotic?
This is a serious question that I'm pondering. Currently, I have a daily driver 2004 S2000 that I absolutely love, and an E36 M3 that is my track car.
But, like all of us car nuts, I'm always on the lookout for "what's next". Lately, I've been scouting out cars like the Porsche 993, Ferrari 308/328/348, and the Acura NSX. A sampling of dream cars, just a little older and more affordable than a more recent exotic. These are cars that fall into the 30-50K price range (obviously depending on lots of factors: mileage, condition, etc. etc. etc., with the F-cars having the largest variance), but that's a very rough range.
(And, yes, I realize that the nicest in the world 328 is a 60-70K car, and some of the 348s are up there as well, not to mention that a 97-98 993 S is easily 60-70K.)
I know that the P and F cars maintenance requirements are much higher than the Honda, as well as much more expensive. (P a little less than F) I'm just thinking that I can buy one of these cars, maybe sink a few thousand into maintenance, drive it for a year or maybe more, and get almost or equal what I paid for it when I sell it.
But, then, I think about how good the S2000 is. On a day like today, when it's 72 degrees with blue skies in Houston, boy is it sure nice to drop the top. It's nice to get into a Honda that starts everyday, that I really never have to worry about doing any kind of real maintenance on, other than scheduled stuff, and even that's cheap. To drive the car with the best shifter in the world (but, once in my life, I want to experience the Ferrari gated shifter!). In a way, the S2000 is really a mini-Ferrari, and I'm wondering if I sell the S, I'll really regret it. OTOH, I want to experience other cars, especially legends like a Porsche or Ferrari.
Just wanted to start some discussion...

very valid thought. it would seem to make sense, but the truth about older exotic cars is that they are unreliable at best and not necessarily as fun. you would basically be trading reliabilty for some old cool factor. i wouldn't, but it might be fun for awhile.

its like dating a pretty girl vs a superhot one. Is the extra baggage with it to you. If yes, go for it. I pondered similar, and have decided to save for a newer exotic rather than getting an older cheaper one now.
