Would You Buy Used 2001 M3 Or 1999 Carrera?
#21
I doubt it -- the 996 turbos are being built alongside the 997's -- and speculation has it that a new turbo will not debut until the 998.
55 for a turbo would be a steal, but is not realistic when 12+ year old 964 turbos are just now into the 40's.

There is no way you are going to get a 993 turbo in the 40's if it is in decent shape with a clean title.
993s should be available for mid 60s with high miles (80K+) (there was one in my area for 64,500)

964 turbos are in the 40's NFRs2000NYC -- and they are damn good cars in their own way.
Yes, plenty. The difference is night and day -- not all of it good. The regular 996 feels a bit more connected and is lighter so in some ways it is more fun to toss around. The turbo on the other hand is "hand of god" fast right out of the box until well over 150, while at the same time very approachable. I now drive mine daily when I am in Denver.

Nah it is doable.
I would not buy the M3 because I am a fan of the motor, but not the motor in that chassis. Too much weight.
I would not buy the 996 because it is a 99 and thus now out of warranty and prone to the RMS issue. A 2002+ 996 would be a better choice, albeit much more expensive. A 96-97 993 would be in my view more fun for a little less money.
Don't plan on putting anything in the rear seat other than a kid under 8 -- or as I do a baby seat.
Sounds like you have a tough choice to make. Oh poor you.

The Carrera is a true sportscar though, handling and in every respect a higher class car IMO... I drive an 04 M3 so take it from me, if you want to enjoy a true sportscar go for the 911 996 or 993... their both nice. If you want an all around nice car, speed, handling luxury, go for the M, and it has space. In a straight line, the M is faster though.
Good luck...

Of your choices... I would go with the 99 Porsche 996, if you look hard enough, you can find fine example just over $35k.
Other than that, I would also consider a 993 (Preferably a C2S or C4S).
Good luck!
