A used Accord/Camry and a set of snow tires? I think AWD is overatted for snow use. FWD+snow tires has better traction in the snow than AWD+all seasons any day. My Dunlop Winter Sport M3 tires get better dry traction than my TSX's OEM Michelins, and supposedly they are great in the snow (won't know until this hot spell in the mid-Atlantic is over).
I can't believe the number of people here in VA that buy mammoth AWD SUVs to cart groceries, and justify the purchase with the 20" or less of snow we get every year.
Cities like Pitt have alot of snowplows and salt/sand trucks. Chances are, you will never see more than a little slush on the road.

I believe in awd, since getting the drive wheels stuck can happen no matter which two they are. Having four drive wheels is great in the snow, especially when you might get stuck in a drift from the shovel trucks. If you park on the street and a shovel truck comes buy, the awd will make getting out a lot easier. I love the Subarus for what you just said though - they offer awd with the benefits of a car and none of the hassle of a truck/suv.

So having gone to school in Pittsburgh for 9 years you really don't need awd. I drove a fwd car when I was there for half the time and rwd for the rest
. You get maybe one good snow a year and they clean the roads really well. if they thing there is going to be a problem with a specific road they will close it.
BTW I never even had snow tires on either car. The three rivers really do a good job of moderating the temperatures.
