There's quite a few things available on the 16 pilot depending on package that don't exist on the highlander. Don't quote me on it but last time I cross shopped the two the pilot has lane watch ,break mitigation, Droid based touch screen w available Garmin based GPS w 4 years of free map updates, lane mitigation, panoramic roof ,9 speed trans , etc which highlander doesn't even have as an option for the same price....both great suvs but the current pilot gives u more for the money

I vote Highlander.
Lexus looks, luxury and quality.
I drive my wife's all the time, it's our go to car because it's so comfortable. Leave the S and the Z in the garage and even take the Highlander on date nights, it's just that smooth and nice to drive.
Both my sister's have Pilots and a Highlander, hands down the Highlander's finish and drive is much better and smoother imo and they tend to agree.
Both have good resale, but I think Toyota's resale tends to be a little bit better along with quality imo.

I highly doubt both your sisters own 2016 Pilots, which is what the OP would buy. Completely different vehicle.
To me, if it's about reliability, they're both equal. If it's about space, the Pilot is better. If it's about towing, I believe they're equal. If it's about ride/handling, the Toyota will be better. If it's about fuel economy, the Toyota will be better (especially the hybrid), though not by much. Both cost about the same. Both have good resale. If it's about features, the new Pilot is going to win handily.

I owned an '03 Pilot 4WD (loved it), purchased it from my Dad at around 150k miles on it. He bought a brand new 2013 Pilot 4WD EX-L and has loved it so far.
Plenty of space in them, more than the Acura MDX. And the Touring/Elite new model has the LED headlights - I'd f@#k with it.

Just loaded up 2 kids, plus 5 adults in our 2012 MDX with all the gear needed for those ladies and kids to be in a wedding.
Why not pick up a CPO used car?
If you go with a flip up 3rd row, just be aware it comes out of the usable trunk space.
