I live in Austin, and had a C4S cab for awhile. I got it because I wanted the wide body car, and the price was right. The AWD (non-turbocharged) 911 gives up almost nothing in terms of performance, weight or feel to the 2wd cars, and was the only way (until the GTS) to get the widebody without going turbo for tons more $.

I guess AWD can help you in sticky situations but I definitely wouldn't seek out (or pay extra) for an AWD variant of a car. Now if the car i'm buying is ONLY offered with AWD that's a different story.

Is there a rule saying you're not allowed to own AWD variants if you don't live up north? Such snobs to think a person's wasting money or talentless for owning an AWD vehicle.
In the case of the 4S, like most folks have mentioned, they like the wide body stance without going all out for a turbo. For anyone to say it's a waste of money or makes the car heavier "on the track"...really? I had no idea most of the people on here had full time careers as professional drivers.

It is a question of interest to me, as I'm kinda/sorta keeping an eye out for a 2wd '02-'04 911 coupe, and it's annoying such a significant percentage are awd.
