why is KBB pricing so much higher than Edmunds?

you get a sense of asking prices (most of which are unrealistic) but not transaction prices.

I don't know if it still applies, but edmunds shows a "true market value". eg. if a new ford explorer offered $10,000's in rebates, then if would affect the true market value of a used explorer, but it woldn't affect the kbb value of the same car.

Well, they're both private companies. Their standards of calculating price are different so they'll have different pricing. Its really impossible for any standard for measuring a car's price because of regional differences in supply and demand. When I was looking for a Civic on craigslist, they're much expensive in SF. This makes sense since gas is more expensive and so, there's a higher demand for Civics and higher pricing. EK Civics sell aroiund $6-8k in craigslist in SF, and one fo my friends in Florida got his Civic for $1500! KBB says they should cost about $2000
