So turbo diesel's make great torque when it's needed and get outstanding highway mileage. Hybrids get great mileage when you're in stop and go traffic and don't need power. Why aren't car companies combining the two with a turbo diesel hybrid?
I'm not sure a turbo-diesel would take well to being constantly stopped and re-started. Maybe an electric oil pump to keep oil flowing through the engine and turbo while running on the electric motor? But that would just add to the complexity.

It would be the best of both worlds if someone can make it viable.

Probably because diesel engines are more expensive to make AND if you use a diesel a hybrid is NOT necessary for great mileage.

I engineer a part that went into the VW Lupo, an overseas model with a 3 cylinder 1.2L turbo-diesel. It set a record a few years back for getting 100 km per 3 liters of diesel! That's 78 MPG in "American." Tell me again why you want a more expensive hybrid version of that?

Plus diesels are already heavier, add the battery pack to that and you really pile on the pounds.

I don't believe that small diesels use much fuel at all when they're idling.

Not worth comibining the two technologies IMO. My wife has a Jetta TDI and likes it as is...looks/feels like a normal car, and it has a huge trunk vs. a trunk full of expensive batteries.

Google the articles comparing the environmental impact of a Prius compared to a H2 Hummer. The battery production is about 10x more harmful than the emissions from the Hummer.

Not this again. This always comes up, even though it has been refuted several times in the past.

yes it has been refuted but it also is true the amount of oil that is used to transport all the different parts of a prius to its assembly plant is alot higher than a regular car.

Didn't they stop issuing those permits? I've heard of cars w/ them going for big premiums, and stop people even finding their bumpers cut to steal the sticker.
CA originally issued 75,000 permits. They then issued another 10,000 permits. The permits were to expire 01/01/08 but have been extended to 01/01/11.

The stickers follow the hybrid car. A used hybrid with the sticker can sell for the same price as a new one.

If your stickers are stolen the state will reissue you more stickers.

Amazing how someone can publish a "study" that's a bunch of BS, and it'll be spread all over the net as factual data by those who like the outcome.

IIRC, the analysis had the Hummer going 300K miles. Have you ever seen a 300K mile Hummer, and do most owners have even enough money (or sense) to drive them that much?

If Honda can get this to market looking virtually the same as it does here, I'll but the hybrid because it looks like this!

I just love it!

I can't wait. Where are they planning to relase it here? Late 2009? 2010?
