A couple of reasons come to mind, first and foremost the proliferation of large trucks and SUV's on our streets. I don't necessarily let these vehicles dictate what I will drive, but at the same time I would not put my kid in such a small vehicle.
The second reason is one that most folks overlook. My wife is from the island of Mallorca in Spain. You see a few of the Smart cars on the island -- but not too many. Surprising when you consider a small island with no real highways (outside of a few kilometers here and there) would be the perfect place for such vehicles. When I ask folks over there why they don't have one as a run about -- especially given the premium applied to parking spaces -- they respond back price.
You can buy a larger VW polo for less money which gets around the same gas mileage and is almost as easy to cram into tight spots -- and is an order of magnitude better should you ever travel on a highway.

We have no parking problems here and we can afford the gas prices. Seems to be a matter of personal preference. Unless its a sports car (where smaller is usually better), I would much rather drive a big SUV like a Range Rover than a little Insight or Prius.
I hope you dont offend anyone with your thread title. On many other boards, you would.
