When is it too much oil?
The dealer has overfilled the engine oil on my 04 Odyssey for the last 3 oil changes. This time the dipstick indicates about 1/4" above the "full" mark. My question is, is this enough to warrant draining the excess?
Oh... the engine was off and had been off for 2 hours, car was level.

If the oil is over the Full mark, then there's too much oil - have you mentioned this to the dealer yet? Not sure at what point it will cause problems, but if the dealer did it three times in a row, maybe someone needs to know how much oil to put in the car.

Yes I did tell the service manager and he tried to tell me that it was impossible because they meter the amount of oil that goes in. To me that means their meter keeps making the same mistake but no one cares to fix the problem. The only reason I keep going back is because they provide free oil changes as long as my scheduled maintenance is done with them. I am seriously considering giving up the free oil changes.
Seems to me good practice would be to put a little less oil than required, check level, and top up if necessary.
This engine has VTEC also and I know VTEC does not like having too much oil in the engine.

Next time you get an oil change, check the level before you drive the car off, and if its over, show the service manager. Oil can be anywhere in the range from "full" to the bottom of the X's - just not below or over them.

I don't think that 1/4" inch over should be any cause for concern, but I would definitely point it out to the service manager.

You might also try getting a second opinion. Maybe try another Honda dealer (assuming you are getting these oil changes at a dealership). I had some bad experiences with oil changes and it led to a damaged engine. Luckily I was able to get the engine replaced under warranty, but since then I have found a new dealer that I trust to do my oil changes.
