when changing wheels by hand

i like to torque my luggs to the max of 250 lbs on my wrench, that way i know they wont come off

Good way to snap studs and/or warp your rotors.

Tighten using arms/hands with the lug wrench and check with a torque wrench when you can. Try to keep about the same torque on all to avoid rotor problems.

another area where people freak out for no reason

reasonably tighten them using a star pattern and forget about it.

Do not agree.

Look at the Honda rotor design, for the most part the rotor is held on by the wheel nuts.
Improperly torqued lugs, as in unevenly tightened, will do a lot to aggravate warping rotor issues.

Torque wrench is very important.

unless you are a complete dunce i fail to see how one cant evenly tighten lug nuts by feel....

of course grossly over torquing them can warp rotors... not many people are going to do that.
