Default What's the next big thing to wait for in future cars?

You know when you are going to buy a computer but then you hear that USB 2.0 will come out or windows XP is just around the corner? Etc..

Well what is worth waiting for in the auto field? BMW has "Direct Injection" on the new 760iL (shrug) is that worth anything? will other cars have it in the near future?

Electronic brake by wire (MB) has not gotten rave reviews by any stretch.

I heard there may be a new electrical standard (24 volts or something like that) but it has a lot of hurdles to go through yet.

Fuel Cell is not worth the price or inconvenience at least while we have oil to last 80+ years.

Hybrid is OK but not setting the world on fire. I mean a Jetta diesel can do just as well.

I think the next big thing here is Diesel. Diesel for economy, luxury, and performance cars and SUV's.

Anything else you guys can see changing the way we drive in the next 5-10 years?

Diesel is decently big up here. 40% of Golfs and Jettas are sold with the TDi engine and a good portion of fullsize trucks are bought with the diesel option.

I hope VW stuffs their V10 TDI with 550lb/ft of torque in their Toureag and sells it over here. What a sweet ride that would be.

Incidentally, the Japanese are behind the Europeans in terms of diesel technology.

But I was going to say the next big thing in cars is the 2005 GTR!!

Hopefully by the end of the decade Hydrogen powered cars will be introduce without having to cost that much. I dont like the Hybrid engine right now but sometime in the future hopefully the'yll perfect it or close to pefecting that tchnology.

The Lotus Elise and that BMW coupe(it was called Z5 or something like that, it look nice hopefully around 40 range) for me

BMW has an additional electric steering rack on the new 5 series. This opens up the way for integrated automatic parking (brakes, steering, accelerator all linked to distance sensors) as shown in 1980's show cars.

Individual controlling of valves (electrically) without a camshaft. Better emmisions & economy, better low-mid-high range response.

More carbon and aluminium pieces. Better integration of all of the major control systems (like new Merc SL).

How about variable compression engines. So if you have an FI'd car, there wouldn't be any lag due to low compression, before the turbo spools up.

Satellite based radar with detailed terrain information that marks all cars as white dots and police as bright red ones.

Ah well, one can dream, can't he?
