Default What's with the front "badge plates"?

I know many of us think the S2000 looks better without a front plate on, and we plug the front plate mounting holes on our bumpers. In CA, a front license plate is required by law.

But lately, I am seeing more and more cars with a front plate that has the badge of the car. For example, a Porsche with a front plate that is a Porsche badge; or a BMW with a BMW badge plate; or a Corvette with a Corvette badge (but never a Chevrolet badge); or a Viper with a Viper badge plate, and so on. So why do people do this? It is not like we don't already know what make of car it is because there is another badge right above the front plate (I also don't understand why people buy rear license frames that have the name of the car or the manufacturer on it, but that is a different discussion). If these people are already putting a front plate on their cars, then why not just put the license plate on instead of these badge plates? If they do not want to mount the license plate, then why not just leave it off completely (some cars look better without any front plates, like the S2000). Can someone enlighten me why people do this?

My wifes porsche is that way because it had it when we bought it and just never put the real plate on. It's the only vehicle we have that has anything resembling a front plate on it.

When ever I go to car shows, I take off the back plate and put on a chrome plate with an H emblem on it that was made for a front plate. Would never put on my car otherwise, but I like it for the shows. Here's a pic:

Yes, there is a cut-out in the front to put a plate. That's just my point, in order to mount a plate, they must take off the plastic cover and then mount a chrome plate that has the two flags on it. Why not just leave the plastic cover on in the first place and forget the front plate all together?
