I'm a big fan of straight sixes, but I cringe at the sound of an E46 M3.
2JZ-GTE and BMW S50 engines sound great imo.

Also supercharger whine sounds horrible imo.

I'm not a fan of the E46 M3 exhaust either. Too 'metal' sounding, make sense?

BUT... I love the way a supercharger sounds. Especially an old school Weiand blower atop a SBC (small block Chevy for you JDMers haha).

Now there's something else I prefer: small block exhaust notes over a those of big blocks.

For those who hate the "tinny" noise of the E46 M3:

tarheel1, does the first video have an aftermarket exhaust? Either way sounded good.
I don't think so. Nothing mentioned in the description anyways. Engines/exhaust sound a lot different under load to me, though, so that might be what you're hearing.

Edit: That raspy sound some people complain about is exactly what I love so much about BMW inline sixes.

I'd ask you to elaborate. It's my experience that raspy exhausts sound much better at full throttle under load, not just revving in a parking lot. But 90% of the time you are at part throttle driving city streets where everyone has to hear your ass-sounding car. WTF?

Nobody believes the car they see in rush hour traffic on the freeway is "more at home on the racetrack," because if that was so they wouldn't see it except on the racetrack. the reality is that people buy raspy foul-sounding exhausts for their BMW for the same reason people buy fart-cannons for their Honda - it sounds OK inside the car, and they are ignorant and/or stupid with more intention than action.

I like BMW engines, but the idiot aftermarket raspy exhausts aren't the reason why for me. There are plenty of exhausts for that car that sound good at all rpms. There is no excuse for a raspy sound to BMW's. Borla comes to mind, just as one example. Magnaflow is another. Exhausts that make power AND sound good. Junk-ass raspy crap ruins a BMW I6 for me.

Different strokes for different folks. I never really liked the way my Cayman S sounded.

The MKIV Supra with it's combination of turbo spool, blow-off, and exhaust is what does it for me.
