I love the sound of almost any horizontally-opposed engine, so the Boxster/Cayman would probably be my pick, though they're certainly skirting the $50,000 boundary a bit. That said, when you're driving a car, there's nothing quite like hearing that engine right behind you in a mid-engine car, making the Cayman or Boxster all that much better. The Elise I once drove was much the same way, the sound and the effect from it being right behind you was/is f'ing amazing.
