I want another toy. Since this will be a "toy" I have absolutely no practicality requirements. I just want something that I can enjoy or have fun with and take to the track every once in a while.
So what would you get with $10K to spend?

Me, probably an S13 240. Convertibles can make for serious issues at the track. Also, an S13 with an SR20 can be had for less than 10k, even if you build it yourself.

I've often heard this, but then how come all the fastest track cars are open cockpit?

the f1 and lemans cars have professional drivers with different rules than places that allow street cars onto their track.
for example, at some tracks they require roll cages for convertibles, in case they flip. as compared to hardtops, where no roll cage would be required.

The only issue with a convertible as a track day car is safety rules. Many tracks and clubs require open-top cars to have a roll-bar and/or a hardtop because of their insurance policies.
I'd go Miata, hands down, the best deal for a track car. They are easily available, have exellent parts availability, unmatched aftermarket support, easy on tires, and they are super fun. All you need is a roll bar and some track brake pads, and you are set.
You can build a nice one for well under $10,000.
I think a V8 GM F-body would make for a really fun track day car too. But IMHO they are not too much fun unless yout have aftermarket suspension on them and they use up tires and brakes fast due to their weight.

I've thought of a Miata, but I already have an S2000. I'd rather not have another roadster.
I was thinking about an E36 M3, but that's definitely going to push me over the $10K mark.
Could a regular E36 be fun?
