If the car isn't my daily driver and it has to be pre 1999, I'd invest in a collectable sports car from the 50s or 60s. Look cool, have fun, enjoy appreciation rather than suffer through depreciation.

The cars I actually cross-shopped with the S2000 were used so this is an easy question for me. My number one choice would be a 85 308 gtsi-QV or this would be a stretch to find a good one for 35k but it's possible an early 993 series 911 or a 964 series 911 this would be easy to find a mint condition example in the high twenties.

I don't think I'd want to own a car older than MY 2000. But if I were going to, I'd try my best to find a decent NSX in that range (although, this seems very hard to do, especially in Canada).
