The Japanese and European markets are very lucky as they still have the choice of either the 2.0 F20C with the 9000RPM redline, or the current 2.2 F22C with the 8000RPM redline. There are alot of other options that they are offered that I am not too familiar about.

Basically JDM is for the novelty factor

the 2.0L JDM motor (which is the only motor over there, they don't have the 2.2 in the JDM market) makes an extra 7hp, due to different pistons and ecu settings.

Many Japanese motors, which are for the most part,
equivalent in geometry to US spec, have higher power
outputs due to higher compression ratios.
This is possible cuz they get better octane at the pump...
you know there's always gonna be some kid trying to fill up his
Integra Type-R with 87.
Some also get less restrictive parts due to different emissions laws.

So speaking only about motors, I feel this is the distinction.
You also gotta consider what motor we're talking about.

Also, JDM 0wnz ur b0n3z cuz its m4d rAre tiiiiite

Perfect example. The DC2 (1994-2001) Integra. USDM vehicles have the round head lights. The Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) vehicles have a much better looking front end.
Actually, the dc2 Integra in Japan only adopted the square headlights in 96'. You'll find that the first ITR in Japan has circle headlights also (1995 model), only the Japanese consumers didn't take to it well, so they went back to the square'ish headlight design from 96-01. Also, as already pointed out...Euro, JDM, AUS markets continue to receive the 2.0L 9,000rpm engine in their 04 + S2K's. Only America received the 2.2L 8,000rpm plant to curb widespread complaints for the lack of torque.

As to the original poster, JDM engines generally make more power/torque due to higher compression ratio's and other goodies, as their quality of fuel is higher than just about anyone else on the planet. As for comparison's sake, their 'regular unleaded' petrol is on the level of our premiuem unleaded. And their premium unleaded is 100 + octane level.

For example the JDM F20C makes around 250hp, but more importantly it makes 161lb-ft of torque, compared to Aussie and US models. The Japanese S2K also weighs in at 1240kg(2728lb), which is 19kg lighter than Aussie models (which is either the same or lighter than US models)...and comes with a GPS Nav. system as well. You'll find that JDM models generally receive more technical goodies and options as compared to their overseas counterparts.

I never have been into the whole JDM thing. I think most of it is just downright unattractive and overhyped. I do, however, love that Type-R front end conversion.
