Just curious how long folks had their first bike before they stepped up to a higher cc.

My first bike was an 89 Honda VTR250 (bought in 1995)...thought it would be the perfect bike to learn on and it was. A total blast...I loved every second of it.

...that is, until the day I test rode my friends 92 CBR600 F2. Once you taste more power you have to have it. The handling was insane too. I bought a '94 F2 in 1997 and then due to taking long trips and the bike getting rave reviews I bought the 99 VFR in May 1999.

I am still very happy with it and due to lack of riding time, it will be mine for a while.

Got a bit off track...I would have probably kept the VTR for a few more seasons had it not been that taste of the F2.

I think the amount of time has less to do with it than the amount of miles you've logged. I've only had my bike about 4 months, but I've clocked over 7000 miles on it. I'm about to sell it to upgrade, mainly because I use it for predominately street riding, and although the R6 is an amazing bike, it makes most of it's power above 10k rpms. I'm going to upgrade to an '02 RC51 most likely, I'd like something with more low end torque, since I spend most of my time between 5k and 9k in street riding. So I guess to sum up, it's not that I'm "tired" of the R6, it's just that after riding for some time, you get a taste for what kind of bike will suit your riding style best.

My first bike after passing my test was an RFV400 (NC35). I had this for just over 2 years before I got pissed of when the rectifier blew for the 3rd time. So I traded it in for a 748s

In the UK 600cc sports bikes are very expensive to insure imediately after passing the bike test.

My first bike when I was 18 was a 9 year old 1976 Honda CB750F SuperSport - what a great bike, but it probably was not the best bike for a beginner (however I had been riding dirt bikes for 10 years). I never tired of that bike, I just didn't ride it much after I bought my VFR, so I decided to sell it. That was a mistake - I still miss that bike. It had over 125,000 miles on it and the only thing that ever failed (other than tires, chain, and other wear items) was an ignition coil at about 90K miles (when it happened, I still rode the bike home about 50 miles on 2 cylinders). The bike was absolutely bulletproof even though it was abused it's whole life. It sill ran like a top the day I sold it. I really miss that bike.

Shit with a ZX6 you should be fine for some time.? I would imagine with proper riding (keeping it reved up) it would be damn fast.

I started on a 400 enduro, then a gpz 305, then a 1993 GSXR600 - the only stock 600 to have a male slider front suspension (which i thought was pretty damned fast).

What the hell do you think you need? a ZX12?

Have you gone to any track days on that thing? I saw a guy flip over his handlebars on the Jefferson course at Summit about a month ago. Funny from my angle

My 1st bike was a '73 Honda CBR 350 (4-cyl) and I loved that bike!
It was a 5-speed and the redline was 13,000, very cool for 29 years ago!
I put about 10,000 miles on it in 2 years.

I sold it and bought my second bike because I had wanted something a bit heavier. When I would ride the 350 on a windy day I was very intimidated with how much the wind would blow me around on the road. In addition I live in extremely hilly wine country and some of the huge hills were just too much for the little guy, or at least the speed I wanted it to go up the hills.

My second bike is an '85 Honda Nighthawk 650. I bought it with 6,000 miles and it now has 49,000. The bike looks like it just rolled out of the showroom. I have had great luck with the bike. It has been fast, fun and dependable. The extra weight has made it a much more confident ride on the wind and I don't notice big hills anymore.

The Nighthawk and the CRX are up for sale. Once they are sold I will be looking for a '98 VFR 800. This will most likely be the biggest bike I ever own. I want the VFR not so much for the 800 but because of the long wheelbase and the fact that this is the type of bike I want. Think nice long-range sport bike, but not something so completely focused on clipping apexes like a 600 F4 or a 929.
