What GM's troubles could mean to the buyers

You make some decent points, honda606, but a world where everyone wasn't lazy, apathetic, and actually cared about their fellow man is the definition of Utopia. It doesn't exist and won't exist until the Second Coming of Christ, but that is a religious discussion I'm not going to get into on Car Talk.
Anyway, I try to avoid Chinese made goods as much as possible, but it's darn near impossible. If I can spend a few bucks more and buy a Made in USA product over a Chinese product, I will. A lot of times that option doesn't exist unfortunately. Hell, I just spent $40k on a new GMC, so I'm trying!
Wife just bought some Portabello Sconces she was hanging up and I asked her just now where they were made. On the bottom, it said "PRC". She immediately guessed it meant People's Republic of China. Wow. They don't put made in China, they now put made in PRC.
Anyway, people like cheap stuff and A LOT of people can only afford cheap stuff. That is why Wal-Mart is the biggest retailer on the planet. People want bare minimum quality for the cheapest price possible.

It is a scarier situation that most people realize. I don't think GM can afford to let Delphi expire... but they might. Meanwhile, as a supplier to Delphi things are getting uglier-than-usual. It was never a win-win supplier-OEM relationship but things are twisting toward hate-hate. They're trying everything possible to reduce costs including weaseling on contracts. We have to watch 'em like a hawk ("no, you can't take shipment of these against your expired contract"). Darn good thing they keep inventory levels low because when they threaten not to pay we threaten not to ship...

As for the premise posted by the OP, that's idiotic. The market for GM parts is HUGE, and if GM doesn't supply them, someone else will. Besides, the US govt. wouldn't let GM fail anytime in the foreseeable future.

Lol... wait, he was being serious with that article? Seriously, go buy a bumper and see the endless amounts of aftermarket options there are out there. Alternator, starter, gaskets, cats, fenders, hoods, doors, etc etc, virtualy every replaceabel component is available in the aftermarket, most of which is made in teh same plants as the oem. Chassis? Seriously, are you going to replace a friggin chassis vs. totalling it? With all the GM trucks ont he roads, if GM's main supplier goes under, does he not think someoen will step to fill the orders for that high demand marketplace?
This article fails miserably, but what's even worse is that there will be a lot of people out there that will read it like gospel.
