I dont think they are overpriced at all. If anything, I think VW bought their way into the market. The V6 starts off in the $30's, while cars with comparable interiors and towing capacities are at least $10-15k more. I liked our Touareg for the short time we had it. I even got stuck in a blizzard in it near Erie, PA, and all I can say is, I'm glad I had the Touareg. I literally couldnt see the front of my car while driving on the highway, but the car never even came close to getting stuck or losing control.

(It was my little attempt at sarcasm. You shouldn't take things so seriously. It's just a car.) ---- OH, and you asked!
This is my perception of it and that's my right, "fair or not". No, I don't have to drive one to be able to say that it is STILL one REALLY expensive VW. Virtually all of the televised autojournal programs have ended up this exact same comment. It is well built, interesting concept, BUT a REALLY expensive VW.

I looked at the Infiniti FX45, VW Touareg and BMW X5 4.4i.
The Infiniti FX 45 is gadget laden, lots of technology, drives and handles almost like a sports car. I wasn't too convinced of the egg shell looks. IMO, this is the ultimate city SUV.
The VW Touareg has an awesome interior, probably one of the best I've seen. Drives good, plenty of power. However, speaking to other owners, its realiability is questionable. Also I was turned off by the wood trim, no option for aluminum, wood is tacky IMO.
The BMW X5 4.4i, doesn't handle quite as good as the FX45 but can hold its own. Lots of power. Exterior/interior are both very nice IMO. Realiability is decent. Since its been on the market for some time, the bugs have been worked out. The other two are still very new and the Touareg is very problematic.
In the end, I was b/w the FX45 and X5. I ended up buying the X5 because I got a very good deal from the BMW dealer and I preferred its looks.
