Most people don't drive over 100 miles per day on average, but this is America and people do not under any circumstances like to give up their freedoms, whether or not they actually use them. People don't want to give up being able to drive wherever they want to easily regardless of if it is polluting the environment. This is why the Volt is essentially the best of both worlds, electric in situations that are 90% of most people's driving and can run on gas for those occasional trips.
I believe cost wise though your best choice is a used Civic CNG . Your not using gasoline and no buying of stupid and expensive batteries years down the road and CNG is cheaper than gas . Problem solved!

Hmmmm... So having a half car that never uses gas (because there is no place to put it) but realistically only have a 60 mile or so range because you need to keep some of that 100 miles in reserve makes more sense than the Volt in which you can use all of that 40 miles without fear of being stuck on the side of the road with a dead battery. Well, you also though Honda invented the double wishbone suspension.

You can use zero gasoline w/ the Volt if you just do short commutes in it, but somehow the ability to drive it cross country or use it like a regular car w/o fear of getting stranded is a negative?
