What car should I buy for under $30k?

nice pick up. Been a fan of the GTI hatches for a long time. I'm still driving the MK IV 1.8T GTI.
Really like the "Jack of all trades" aspect of these cars. I probably wouldn't want red, that's about all
congrats

So, while I was at a local VW dealership this weekend to look at a couple used GTIs I found myself behind the wheel of a new one, just to prove to myself that I really did not need it. Well, I was wrong and I did.

As Dr Wot put it, there is a German feel (materials, styling, ergonomics, and driving feel) you get in the GTI that the competition just does not have

That's a really nice choice. He is totally correct on the feel. VW interiors just feel great. The materials and tolerances are excellent.
My wife loves her MK IV GTI. It really is amazing how useful a GTI is. I remember leaving Lowes with a gas grill, a kitchen sink, two boxes of tile and some other stuff and everything fit.
Of your choices, I would have been severely tempted by the GLI though.

Here are the first (phone camera) pics.
And the most important shot, my son's approval of Dad's new ride!
(he wanted to stay up till Dad got home with the new car - that's my boy!)
