What is binding?

"binding"is a term that is used when a cars chassis has too much grip throughout...when racing 125 karts, or any type of kart racing we would use "biking" as the term for "binding" meaning too much grip throughout the corners and the kart would actually pick itself up off the inside of the corners. So put that into a bigger chassis/AWD car and there you have it. And im assuming you are talking about binding up when you are launching the car?

The reason I asked was b/c when my friend makes a turn in his audi a4 quattro the car starts to shake- and for some reason I thought it was called binding. You guys wouldnt happen to know what causes that would you?

Not sure about this, but I have an AWD sienna. Once in a while when I'm doing a max acceleration while turning sharply with low grip surface the stability control starts in with the brakes. Causes a little shudder.
Stability control can cut engine power as well. Wonder if that could be it? Might try switching off SC if he has it to see what happens.

There is a thing with 4x4 trucks where they are NOT supposed to be driven on dry pavement b/c the wheels get too much traction. The problem may be called binding b/c when you turn the wheels are moving at different speeds and need to slip or else can hurt the drivetrain.
This is only with old fashon 4-on the floor systems. Most cars and a lot of SUVs now have a different system that is usually called AWD or on demand AWD that have no problem with high traction.
