I'd buy the GTI just to get the DSG gearbox. That sequential tranny is 100x better than the SMG on the M3 and the F1 on the Ferrari F430.
Now about the engine difference, the power might be close but torque on the GTI is way better and in the low RPM where you use everyday. I wish my S had that much torque.
The only credit I'd give to the Si is the relative light weight. German cars are known to be overweight. Which is ok when you are commuting, but when having fun on the twisties you want to be as light as possible.
If I was in the market for a fwd compact (This would never happen, as I haven owned a fwd car for over 10 years) I'd get the GTI. The new R32 should be interesting.

I have the new SI and I love it. IMO, the GTI is a better car but I think yoru paying a little more for it. The GTI communuit is pretty loyal. I think both cars will sell well. I just think the 20k I paid for my SI would not get me a stripped down GTI. I may be wrong. i do like the look of the GTI.
