I have the new SI and I love it. IMO, the GTI is a better car but I think yoru paying a little more for it. The GTI communuit is pretty loyal. I think both cars will sell well. I just think the 20k I paid for my SI would not get me a stripped down GTI. I may be wrong. i do like the look of the GTI.

I stopped by the VW dealer today around 2:30PM. There was a black 6MT out on the patio.. keep in mind, this is my first time seeing the new GTi in person.
My first impression was wow, it looks so small for the weight? Then the whole aura of this visit started turning sort of like twilight zone. As I looked around I noticed an older lady taking delivery of a used Mini. Two salesman came out to look at my car and there was no other movement on the lot. Even on Sundays my Honda dealer(s) are crawling with employees and customers.
Next I asked the wife to hop out and check out the v-dub w/ me... Her first question was, is it cheaper than the Si? I looked at the sticker from the passenger side and the car was like $25K. I noticed the red painted calipers which were already covered w/ brake dust (looked bad). The 17" wheels were not too appealing either. Interior was typical 2004 Audi-esque. As I walked around, boom... there it is... 1st defect. Driver's side tail lamp is completely covered with condensation.
I left right after that but wish that I had looked around for car a with the optional 18's. The Jetta GLi is what actually caught my eye first. cheers.

Well its vw, so i am sure the electrical problems are on the way. its boosted and makes only 3 more hp than the si. now i hate vw and i do love my hondas, but i would rather have a redline or cobalt ss sc, hell dare i say SRT4 than a GTI.

Also, the GTi is a 2.0L NA, not a 1.8T.

The GTi is built in Wolfsburg, so no QC issues should be present.

GTI is 2.0T, the new NA engine for Golf/Jetta is 2.5.

The MkV GTi is a HUGE car compared to all previous generations of golfs. I parked my Mk4 R32 next to one last Wednesday at a car meet, and it was dwarfed by the new GTi. Everything is bigger. Longer wheelbase, longer front/rear overhang, taller, wider, bigger trunk, bigger interior, bigger windows (the front windows and doors are at least 4" longer )... just a monster of a sport hatchback, in size comparison. It's like GTi-zilla.
That's where the extra weight is coming from, it's 300 lbs heavier than the Mk4 GTi and 100 lbs heavier than the Mk4 R32.
For comparison, the 1977 GTi weighed 1600 lbs and had 110hp (euro spec)
My 2004 R32 weighed 3200 lbs and had 250hp
The 2006 GTi weighs in at 3308 lbs and has 200hp

I think through all 5 generations the GTI/Golf has gotten bigger each time. I hope they do bring over the Polo and Polo GTI to position under this.
Also regarding four doors not being a good thing those owners will have more practicality and lower insurance premiums than their 2 door counterparts.
