Not sure where you're getting your facts about discounts on the GTi. I certainly haven't seen any.
Of course pricing depends on the area that you are buying, but looking at the national base prices the Civic Si sells @ MSRP whereas the GTI sells below MSRP.

Base GTI:

Base SI:

Where I live (Bay Area) the Civic Si sells for 2k above msrp whereas the GTI sells around 1k below MSRP. I used http://www.carsdirect.com to get the pricing for my area code. I find that site to be pretty accurate (within a few hundred bucks or so).

My Honda dealer still marks up their S2000's by $5K. In fact, they have a 'market adjustment' on each model they sell. So a base Civic is marked up by around 3K.
Just because a dealer has a "market adjustment" on the window sticker doesnt mean you have to pay for it. In fact, only a sucker would. The Honda dealer that my parents bought their 05 CR-V SE did the same crap (the window sticker had a 2k market adjustment above MSRP). They ended paying 200 above invoice. They went to http://www.carsdirect.com to get an accurate gauge of what they really should be paying, not what the dealer wanted them to pay.

So its just dealer hype.

X2.

This board has really lowered the average enthusiast level in the past 2-3 years. So many clueless tools. If it's not a Honda it sucks! My parents who could only afford Hondas told me so!!!

The ads for the VW are definately better. Especially when they bash up the ricer cars. "German engineering,yo."

If it were to be my only car I'd go VW because the turbo will be more fun day to day. If it were for my second car I'd pick the civic because I THINK it would be more reliable and the milage will be better. (don't quote me EPA ratings and say they are close, if you have owned a turbo car and use boost EPA ratings go down the toilet. NA cars will go to the edge of lean to get more power, FI (stock ecu) cars will dump huge amounts of fuel at high boost to prevent knock and protect the warranties) I would be on boost more that I would ring out the high rpm in the civic too because I can't take the racket that much with a closed ceiling. I hate driving the S with the top up.

The thing is, you can get a GTI with a slushbox (DSG) which a lot of people prefer. This is said to be one of the best engine/tranny combos around today.
The DSG ain't no slushbox. I'd kill for this tranny on the S2000.

Doesn't the GTI have a true automatic option, too?0

So, if all of my friends have sex with a girl, and she gives them all herpes, I guess I shouldn't listen to them, eh? Might as well bareback it, no way to learn anything except to experience it myself.

I would probably go with the SI because of the maintainance factor.

Less $$ IMO

Well since you put it that way.

I have seen about five. Much to my surprise I would say all of the drivers were in their 30's or older and three of the five were women. That is not the buyers I would have guessed.
