VW looking to make a proper enthusiast's car without platform sharing. I think Hell may be freezing over.
I really hope somebody at VW figures a way to get this thing on the showroom floor at a reasonable price. After seeing stuff like the R32 and TT, I'm not holding huge hopes for a new, aluminum, mid-engine chassis roadster being affordable after seeing how much money they want just to take a stupid trip down their corporate parts bin.
With any luck, they'll pull it off and hopefully expose the huge rip off their other "enthusiast" cars are.

All kidding aside, I like VW products and have two. Don't forget that VW had couple of disadvantages selling cars here in the states. Products like the R32 and TT are expensive because of labor and currency exchange rates. VW is in the unenviable position of having to charge a premium price for products produced under a non-premium brand.
Seriously though, the R32 sounds great. It's a little inert feeling compared to a BMW. It's got phenomenal grip but not too much feel. That's at least my impression although I have never driven the car aggressively. I think that the TT is simply a stunning looking car. It's not as outright sporty as an S2000 or even the Z4 (I've driven the previous generation, not the current one, so I'm not in a position to have an opinon about the current Z4). Again, I've only cruised in a TT with a DSG, never driven it hard. It's a nice car that fulfills its brief.

I agree, the R32 does sound great. Outside of that it was the same price as an S2000. One company sold a completely bespoke purist's car plus it was a convertible to boot, the other sold a $16,000 econobox for $30k+ with two extra cylinders and "AWD" (and without limited slips on either axle, calling it all wheel drive is a far fetch). To say their position is unenviable is an understatement.
To burst KWgpws2k's bubble: I'll be shocked if they're can price it below a base TT. Like I said, for the sticker price they wanted for a car that started out as a Beetle/Golf, this car being cheap would be a complete 180 for VW.

This will be well over 40k
At that price it would be attractive. Decent get up, high milage and rear engine looks and driving dynamics. Not an all out performance car, but does what about 80% of the roadster buyers need.
I'd like a little more speed but its still pretty cool.

ill be disappointed if this costs much more than an Eos.....that thing comes with the 2.0T, and a power hardtop. Realistically both will come with a standard VW parts bin interior (which isnt a bad thing btw).

Looks nice, but it won't be below $30K. That 45mpg is most likely European cycle.
